What to get my Grandmother

I have no good ideas for my grandmother's Christmas gift. So I have a new contest. Best gift idea wins....something. It's a surprise.

Tips- Grandma is 85, likes to knit, crochet, sew, and read novels that make me blush. She is originally from Germany, she has not yet figured out how to work a VCR, not sure she knows what DVDs are, and her sound system was purchased in the late 80s. She has dietary issues, so caffeine, nuts and berries are out.

So, any ideas?

By the way: any Benito Juarez comments officially disqualify you from this contest, Bobby.

Why don't you get her something that will make her hobbies easier---a handy organizer basket, some little gadget from one of these knitting stores, one of those big magnifying glasses that stands by your chair and you swing it over your work or crossword puzzle or whatever (yes, I'm making assumptions here).

Or you could give her some books. The Mark of the Lion trilogy by Francine Rivers is EXCELLENT and would satisfy her need for excitement in a non-raunchy way. :)

  • At 11:12 AM, Blogger cheryl said…

I do like that trilogy. hmm. maybe.

yes she does do crosswords, good assumption! but she has all of that! she has so many knitting organizing tools and gadgets that i think she has some in storage in her basement. and she has the little swinging maginfying glass thing too. i'll think in the trilogy. i gave her some Jan Karon books once, but i'm not sure if she liked them. she never gave me any feedback on them.

what about a Rastafarian hat? That sounds cool to me

  • At 9:21 AM, Blogger Lorie said…

My assumption being about your granny's eyesight, not whether she does crossword puzzles. :)

    That's funny.

    A motorcycle.

  • At 11:26 AM, Blogger cheryl said…

hmm, motercycle. for the sake of everyone else on the road, maybe not.

Rastafarian hat. that would go great with the poofy sleeved knitted sweaters and matching pastel polyester pants. :-)

  • At 9:42 AM, Blogger Lorie said…

Okay, so what do I win? :)

  • At 10:07 AM, Blogger Bobby said…

Cheryl: I'm not going to mention the name of a certain someone with the initials "BJ" but you know good and well that I should have won that contest. Instead, you gave the prize to King.

Now, months later, I have come up with a gift that easily is more impressive than any other suggestions. Don't make me an uncrowned champion again. Don't put someone else up on a throne of lies. Give me my due.

  • At 12:34 PM, Blogger Bobby said…

You could get her a crochet pattern of your face. That way, she'd be crocheting the face of her beloved grand-daughter.

  • At 12:35 PM, Anonymous Harvey Brown said…

Get her a WWJD bracelet to remind her and help her make decisions. That way when she's tempted to read one of those racy novels, she'll think, "Would Jesus read this smut?" (Pardon my French.)

It's the gift that keeps on giving.

  • At 12:39 PM, Blogger Rabby said…

Tar-and-tarnation! If that ain't the silliest thing I ever did read. She ain't a gonna stop a readin' the smut because a no bracelet.

An I'll tell ya another thing: a Rasta, rast, rasaf -- one a them hats Nick spoke of -- that's the best idea I heard of in this blog. But another thing is, you could give her a lucky rabbit's foot. I have my dearly departed mother's around my neck, an it brings me no end to good fortune.

  • At 1:19 PM, Blogger cheryl said…

Rabby, as a believer, should you be placing any amount of faith in such a trinket?

Bobby, I'm not saying you've lost. just offering a little friendly tip that you are allowed to enter more than one suggestion into this contest. :-)

  • At 3:08 PM, Blogger Bobby said…

    I've already entered two!

Okay ... how about you knit HER something! It's the ultimate gift, because it shows you're carrying on the tradition. It is the ultimate respect -- she knows that something she has valued has passed down, and will live on through you. It says, "I want to be like you, Grandma."

    Now what do I win?

  • At 3:20 PM, Blogger cheryl said…

actually, i did that about 6 years ago. i crocheted her a huge elaborate aphgan. i hadn't even told her I'd learned how to crochet. she was very pleasantly surprised. i don't really have the time to repeat that, though. it takes time to crochet or knit anything worth having.

Lorie's idea about the books was really good. Keep trying, though. you can do it!

  • At 8:30 AM, Blogger Bobby said…

Stop taunting me with Lorie's precious little book idea. It's frazzling my nerves and making my creativity go on the fritz.

I'm still thinking. I will win this prize. This freaking prize.

Um, I think if Rabby or Harvey win, they want their prize to go to me.

  • At 10:39 AM, Blogger Lorie said…

    This is fun.

  • At 11:12 AM, Blogger cheryl said…

i agree. come on Bobby, you can do it, don't give up.

  • At 11:19 AM, Blogger Bobby said…

You could give her, you could, you ... ARGH! What's the prize, anyway? I need to know what I'm playing for. I need to know.

After I've eaten lunch I bet my brain will start working like 60 and I'll think of the best idea ever.

    Fig tree in Jesus.

  • At 11:49 AM, Blogger cheryl said…

did I mention she likes tea? she does.

  • At 1:14 PM, Blogger Bobby said…

Get her a scone mix thing from the specialty food section of World Market, and some apricot jam to go with them, and some chocolates to snack on while she bakes the scones.

I bet that just drove a stake in the heart of ol what's-her-name and her books! Do I win?

  • At 1:30 PM, Blogger cheryl said…

wow! good job! that's pefect! I'll get right on it!

    books next year

yes, Bobby, you win. the prize will be anounced, um, soon...

btw. my word verfying thingy is njoinome. sounds like enjoy gnome. so enjoy gnomes, friends!

  • At 2:15 PM, Blogger Bobby said…

Cheryl, I don't even know what you said in the end, but I just want to say that I'd like to thank my mom and dad, and God, and all the folks who always believed in me.

And I whipped Lorie. Whipped her bad. Like she stole something. Like a government mule. Like a red-headed stepchild. Like, dare I say it, a rolling stone.

Man, that's gonna leave a mark.

  • At 2:16 PM, Blogger Bobby said…

    Like a scalded dog.

  • At 2:29 PM, Blogger Lorie said…

May I just point out that, in reality, this prize should be mine after all since Puppy Boy (aka. Bobby) had never stepped foot in nor seen/heard of World Market until yours truly introduced him to it (and methodically acquainted him with each and every item in the gourmet food section) LAST WEEKEND!

Not to mention the all-important fact that the tea clue was not given at the outset of this so-called contest. Had it been, I would have suggested a tea-themed gift basket WITH a novel (namely the first book in the FR trilogy, which leaves you set for the next two gift-giving occasions).

But this clearly not a serious contest, so I won't sweat it...

Sister King, I feel sad for you. You should admit that you were beaten, beaten soundly, by the superiour mind.

It's no shame to admit defeat against an opponent who is just too smart, too witty, too charming, too, dare I say it, verbally advanced.

I will be praying for you, my sister.

  • At 2:51 PM, Blogger Lorie said…

    Harvey, Harvey, Harvey...

I can tell you're the new kid on the block.

  • At 3:07 PM, Blogger cheryl said…

you guys are tooooo much. seriously. i think you were siblings in a past life, or i would if i believed in past lives. if Shirly McClain knew you she would think you had been siblings in a past life.

The prize will be with me on Sunday, Jan 1, 2006 at SJ.

  • At 3:19 PM, Blogger Bobby said…

We're twin brothers of different mothers.

    Except that Lorie's a girl.

I will be honored to claim my prize on Sunday, January 1. What a way to begin the New Year. The shadow of Benito Juarez has been erased. King is dead; long live The King.

Thank you Cheryl, for this opportunity.

  • At 9:35 AM, Blogger Lorie said…

Yeah, give it to Bobby. His delusions keep him happy.

  • At 11:07 AM, Blogger cheryl said…

should i still give it to him even though he just mentioned Benito Juarez?

  • At 12:39 PM, Blogger Bobby said…

What? That was a benign reference!!!

Don't worry Lorie -- whatever my prize is, I'll let you look at it. Once. Before I take it away forever.

  • At 2:14 PM, Blogger Lorie said…

Cheryl, I will trust you to do what your conscience permits with regards to the distribution of this prize. Follow your heart. You have it in you to do what is right.

  • At 10:35 AM, Blogger Nick Nye said…

wow...I'd answer but it seems like I would get involved is some kind of family fued.

Nick, see that cat on Lorie's shoulder in her blog picture? That's an attack cat. It's mauled me three, four times already.

  • At 8:51 AM, Blogger Bobby said…

Another week of anticipation! I will be there with those golden bells on.

I am humbled, yes humbled, by my huge, impressive, daunting victory.

  • At 8:27 AM, Blogger Bobby said…

Thank you very much for my prize, Sister Cheryl. I am awed and humbled. It's not even important that I won it because I outsmarted everyone. It's just important that I won.

    Have another contest soon.

rabby, it simply isn't true that you don't get anything. it sounds like you get disappointment and frustration.

when was the last time you wrote anything on your blog? hm?

  • At 9:52 AM, Blogger Alex & Laura Beth said…

I think you should give her a NEW BLOG ENTRY!!!

  • At 2:07 PM, Anonymous sarah said…

i think we should award a prize to the person who inspires Cheryl to post something new.

here's one: what should Cheryl get her nephew for Easter?

    Discuss.

  • At 3:55 PM, Blogger cheryl said…

so this is seriously the fist time I have been on here since January! My new job does not allow time for blogging, but I will try to start blogging in my non-work hours.

  • At 5:00 PM, Blogger Jason said…

Cheryl, you must be sooooooo popular to get 43 comments about your grandmothers Christmas gift! We should bind all these super-long comments on peoples' blogs into a book. I think it could be a bestseller.
